If you just want to start out and get your feet wet, try Yahoo's Geocities plan. It is cheap and their Sitebuilder is an easy leg up. If you are more brave, you can get a cheap site from somebody like godaddy (I like them because their Linux sites have all the features you will eventually want). They offer site building software (I have no experience with that). Nvu is a good freeware page creator, very WYSIWYG. Firefox is not only an excellent browser, but also comes with a very excellent FTP client. Have fun.
