You could copyright your idea/design before giving it to the developer. Most countries allow a basic form of self-copyright by posting the plans, etc to yourself in an envelope that is sealed and has your signature along the seals to prove you thought of an idea first. After being stamped by the postal system and delivered back to you, it can then be stored with your solicitor who will record what date they were given it as an extra layer of proof.

Your better-off making sure that you hire someone you can trust though as it sounds like your trying to do it on the cheap and taking a risk that it could be stolen or you could have the price risen on you.

Yet another option could be to create the website yourself using a free CMS (Content Management System) like Joomla or Wordpress

These have thousands of templates (skins) to change their appearance and can be used on many free webhosts, along with other free items like PhpBB (Forums). One such free host with no adverts could be FreeHostia

either you or the web builder copyrights it the design for you. If the web designer builds it they normally copyright the work for you but they are the “administrator” of the site then. You commission someone to design a site, they are not going to risk a law suite copying it, it is in the contract you strike up with the designer? Beside all they have to do is change the design by 30% or more to avoid copyright infringments. It’s the self builders on google or yahoo you should be concerned with. How do you think Firefox started out, took IE and changed it? Mr Gates “borrowed” MP 11 from Apple, they took him to court and he just paid up? you install windows as it comes with IE, but you want FF, so you download that and it takes all its settings from IE even goes one for one for add-ons!

    Hi,

If you want to build a website and are thinking of getting in a web designer / developer to help the first thing to work out if your going to go with a company or freelancer. If your funds are limited then a freelancer might be the best port of call (if doing it yourself isn’t an option… thinking wordpress..etc), as they could give you a closer better quality of service.

Before taking on someone to build your site make sure you look at their last projects and try to get some references, also a main thing to do is draw up a contract. Here you can set your agreed amount of work, costings, and other T&Cs (like ownership of the final copyright etc), this is useful because it will give you legal protection as not all rights are automatic and have to be asserted in order to be legally binding.

Don’t worry about freaking anyone out with contracts etc any freelancer / web design company worth working with will be fine with it (it offers them protection too).

Finally about idea stealing, unfortunately there is no way to stop anyone ripping off your design / images etc once the site is live however keeping a close eye on copyright (and declaring it) will hopefully allow you to protect your images if you see them used without your say.

Last thing — if your not sure checkout citizens advice or a legal contact.

    hope this helps
