I have a client who claims he knows a guy that can make his website first on google. Is there a way to do so? I know you can pay to make it come up on the side bar, but are there any tricks out there to make it rank higher?

Always beware of anyone who says ‘I can get you to number 1 in Google’. It’s like saying I can show you how to win the lottery – You think it means the jackpot but they really mean the $5 prize.
For instance, if you ranked number one on Google for the search term ‘lose weight fast’ (and presuming you sold weight loss products) you would expect to get around 170,000 visitors a month.
If, on the other hand you ranked number 1 for ‘how to lose weight really fast’ you could expect about 400 a month.
So you can see that it’s important to rank number one for the right keywords.
Also most of the ‘common’ keywords are already ranked by high power websites so getting to number one can be a challenge for any keyword or keyword phrase.
Most web sights nowadays are created from the bottom up. I.e the keywords come first and the web site is built around them. If you have an existing site you may either be in a niche where the keywords are very hard to rank for or you may need to do some major changes to your site’s content.
One other way is use a network of web 2.0 sites. it is a standard method used to get huge amounts of very targeted traffic to your website.
Basically it means you keep your own site (known as the money site) as it is and don’t even worry about SEO. You then create blogs and social websites like Facebook, Squidoo, hub pages etc. You do not try and sell anything on these sites. you simply write them based on the ‘keywords/phrases’ (lots of related ones). And give the readers interesting content and put links to your money site.
This does two things.
1. You get direct targeted traffic to your site
2. Google sees lots of web sites pointing to your money site and assumes it must be important. So Googles pushes it up the rankings. So you get a sort of double whammy.
This is fairly easy to achieve as you do not have to ‘rewrite’ your existing site. You can read all about how to do this in a free book at
